I watched a Gregory Peck interview soon after To Kill a Mockingbird was released. He recounted how he saw Miss Nelle Harper Lee standing off set after a particularly poignant scene, visibly crying. He said he strutted up to her, confident he had nailed the part of Atticus Finch, patterned after her lawyer father. She knocked the wind out of his sails when she said, “When you came around that corner, you looked just like my daddy, with your little pot belly.”
