When I was in 5th grade, my family went to the Rose Bowl Parade in California. Gregory Peck was the parade’s marshall and rode in a special car among all of the floats. My parents were excited, but of course, as a 5th grader, I had no idea who he was. Years later, when I started teaching the novel To Kill A Mockingbird, and fell in love with Atticus Finch, I watched the movie, and made the connection to that parade. It was 15 or so years later, but I was thrilled then that I had seen Atticus in real life.
